Salt

I finished reading salt., Nayyirah Waheed's first published book of poetry, on the train earlier this week and I'm gonna stash my ten fave poems here cuz I think my loved ones are sick of me sharing them via text message.

i knew you.
before
i met you.
i've known you my whole life.

— nafsi

she asked
'you are in love
what does love look like'
to which i replied
'like everything i've ever lost
come back to me.'

when you are
here.
everything
is
wild.

— moon

i wake
to you everywhere.
yet
you are not here.

— reach

getting yourself together.
what about undoing yourself.

— the fix

in our own ways
we all break.
it is okay
to hold your heart outside of your body
for days.
months.
years.
at a time.

— heal

eyes that commit.
that is what I am looking for.

if you are softer
than before
they came.
you
have been loved.

i fell apart many times.
so.
what does that say about me
besides
i live through
wars.

chemistry
is
you touching my arm
and
it
setting fire to my mind.
