At the Broken Places

I started Jennifer Niven's All the Bright Places shortly after finishing Plan B last night and I got as far as the book's epigraph, a line from Ernest Hemingway's World War I novel A Farewell to Arms, before I had to stop and put it down.

The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.

Immediately I thought about my dad and about what he's been through over the course of the last two and a half years and how unbreakable he's seemed through it all and how desperately I wish that the "and afterward" part would never come.
