My Facebook feed turned red today as folks with whom I'm connected changed their profile pictures to a modified version of the Human Rights Campaign logo to show support for marriage quality.
According to social media news site Mashable, the movement picked up steam this morning when openly gay formerStar Trek actor George Takei posted the red-hued square on his Facebook page, which has nearly four million 'Likes.'
A host of celebrities followed Takei's lead, Social News Daily reported, including Ben Affleck, Evan Rachel Wood, Kate Walsh, Lance Bass and Sophia Bush, all of whom changed their profile pictures. Even members of Congress heeded the HRC's message to "paint the town red." The Denver Post confirmed that by early afternoon at least thirteen lawmakers had changed their Twitter avatars in support of gay marriage.
Although my own personal Facebook usage is mostly limited to bathroom breaks and Muni rides, I couldn't help but glance at my phone every few minutes today to bask in the scarlet glow of support for equality. In fact, so moved was I at much of the content passing through my feed that I felt compelled to save and share my favorite posts, which I've done below in the convenient style of a list.
