Stage Blight

"If you would like to photograph your graduate receiving their diploma," the dean of my brother's college instructed the audience during this weekend's commencement ceremony, "please approach the stage only after their name is called."

While we managed to follow the dean's "only after their name is called" directive, my family interpreted the "please approach the stage" instruction in a manner slightly alternative to the rest of the graduation's attendees.

Despite the fact that our photo op prolonged the commencement ceremony by at least three minutes, my family's departure from the stage garnered the second loudest applause of the afternoon, second only to the ovation received by the dean thirty seconds later when he said, "Nobody else do that."
